A mulberry tree can be propagated in two ways, using either seeds or cuttings. You can find out how both methods work here.

Multiply mulberry tree - 2 methods
Once the mulberry propagation project has been determined, you can choose between two different approaches.
- One option is To grow mulberry seeds into young plants and then plant them in the garden or tub to keep your mulberry company. This method would take a little longer and is also more risky because the seedlings are not uncommon and are generally somewhat more sensitive.
- The other way to propagate a mulberry tree is to grow it to divide into several plants using cuttings, You don't have to wait that long for a stable crop and also don't buy any seeds of the plant.
Grow several mulberry trees with seeds
If you have got hold of some mulberry seeds, it is best to plant them in May to grow seedlings and then young plants. First of all, a suitable plant pot is required, as well as the right substrate. In principle, any growing soil that contains sand, contains a little lime and is also particularly permeable to water can be used - soil containing peat should be avoided.
The seeds must be distributed on the soil and then covered well with a little more soil, since they only thrive in the dark. The container should be exposed to the sun, partial shade is also fine.
It should be noted that the seeds must not be stored too dry, regular watering after the first watering is therefore a must. However, watering and waterlogging should not occur, as this would cause the sensitive seedlings to mold and die.
First mulberry seedlings usually appear after two to three weeks and can be selected after a further waiting period. It should be borne in mind that mulberry trees need a lot of space and should be replanted regularly if they are kept in a bucket.
The young plant must be protected from the cold in the first winter to survive and to be transplanted into the garden after further growth. Full-grown mulberry trees are immune to colder seasons of up to minus 20 degrees Celsius, but young trees of this type cannot withstand quite as cold temperatures.
Mulberry trees multiply through cuttings
There are also two ways of propagating cuttings. Both ways provide a young tree that is already stable enough to be set in the garden after a short time.
Classic propagation | Soil cuttings without prior separation from the tree |
first a shoot of the mulberry tree is cut off | a branch of the mulberry tree is bent down and planted in the ground (with the tip of the shoot) |
this should have a length of about 15 to 20 centimeters | the whole should be attached by tent pegs |
now all leaves except the first pair are removed | If the bent branch forms roots or new shoots, it can be separated from the tree and potted |
the bark at the interface and a little further above is scraped off
now the cutting can be placed in a container with water or loose earth
if the cuttings form the first roots and new leaf pairs or shoots, the propagation has worked and the young plant can be potted until it has gained sufficient strength |
With both approaches, it is very important to water enough. In addition, the cutting should always be repotted according to its size so that it can quickly gain strength and size. If the cuttings are planted as a young plant in the garden, it should also be noted that they may need a support post to be prepared for all weather conditions.

If some of the roots do not look healthy - for example if they are affected by mold - they can be removed with a small knife to keep the mulberry tree growing healthy. Fertilizing a cuttings is also worthwhile after rooting to help strengthen the trunk of the future tree early on. This way, he will soon be able to assert himself better against weather and frost. Incidentally, it is also okay here to use ordinary potting soil that contains little peat.
