If you want to enjoy your spice bark next year, you have to hibernate the plant properly. Simply bringing them into the house is far from enough.Spice bark is not frost hardy
The spice bark (Senna corymbosa) is one of the non-frost-resistant plants. That is why wintering in a protected frost-free location is necessary. However, it is not enough if you only bring the spice bark into the house. You cannot simply leave the plant to itself. You have to choose the right location and the right temperature. In addition, the spice bark needs some maintenance at the winter location.
Put in the spice bark early
Even temporary night frosts can damage the delicate spice bark. It is therefore better to bring the plants into the winter quarters as soon as the night temperatures regularly drop below 5 ° C. If there is not enough space, you can cut back the spice bark vigorously. However, pruning is not necessary for the plant.
The temperature at the winter location
You may not expose the spice bark at minus temperatures. On the other hand, if the temperature is too high, there is a risk that the plant will be attacked by pests. In particular, aphids and spider mites often cause problems with warm spice bark. Therefore, select a temperature range of not less than 2 ° C and never more than 10 ° C. In addition to adhering to the permitted maximum and minimum temperatures, you do the plant a favor if the temperature fluctuations during the day are as small as possible.
The brightness at the winter location
Spice bark can be dark to light in winter. The less light falls on the plant, the lower the temperatures should be in the above range. In very dark locations, you have to assume that the spice bark will lose all leaves. This is by no means a problem, but rather an advantage, since leafless plants are less likely to become victims of aphids and other pests.
Water and fertilize at the winter location
The fluid requirement of the spice bark is significantly reduced in comparison to the warmer seasons in winter. For this reason, water at longer intervals of about two weeks and then also not in large quantities. The root ball occasionally needs to be given some water, but not completely soaked. If the spice bark has dropped its leaves, you can proceed even more carefully when watering. You do not need to fertilize the spice bark in winter.
Clear out the bark late
Take some time to clear the bark in spring. Ideally, wait for the ice saints in mid-May. It is possible to place the plants on the terrace earlier. However, you should still keep some space in the house so that you can offer the necessary protection to the spice bark at short notice if necessary.
